Old Country Store Announces Book Signing with historian Billy King

(Jackson, TN)   The Old Country Store is proud to announce a book signing event with Billy King, historian and president of the Big Black Creek Association, on Saturday, November 5th from 12 noon to 2:00 pm at the Old Country Store in the Ice Cream Parlor.  The public is invited to attend.  Mr. King will be on hand to greet the public and sign copies of his new book, Big Black Creek Vol. 1

The Big Black Creek Historical Association (BBCHA) was founded in 2006 by Mr. King along with 28 members of the community to identify, preserve and promote historical sites with the communities of Denmark, Mercer, Leighton and Woodland, all small towns west of Jackson, Tennessee. The name of the group comes from the Big Black Creek, a waterway that figured prominently in the early settlement of the area and the American Civil War.  It is a 501(c)3 organization and was organized and is run by volunteers.

The work that they have accomplished in a few short years is remarkable.  The group has received grants for their historic preservation work from such groups as Humanities Tennessee, the National Trust, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.  When the "Journey Stories" exhibit visited their restored Pennington Building in Mercer, Tennessee for six weeks in early 2011, over 4,000 people registered to see the exhibit  and the group invited over 1,400 students in at their expense.  It was the smallest venue ever for a Smithsonian exhibit and one of the most successful. They have hosted numerous events the past few years including cemetery walks and "Christmas at Ebenezer" and have received awards for their historic preservation work.  The Association, led by Mr. King, worked tirelessly to secure grants to restore the historic 1854 era Denmark Presbyterian Church. Work is scheduled to begin November 1st of this year.

All contributions to the BBCHA are invested in the preservation of historic sites in these areas.   Donations are tax deductible.  If you would like to make a donation toward the work of the Association mail a check to: Big Black Creek Historical Association P.O. Box 50  Denmark, TN  38391.  For more information on the important work being done by the Association visit www.bigblackcreekhistorical.com and also their Facebook page.

Donnell Century Farm Reminder! Casey Jones Corn Maze

Updated 10/28:  Last weekend to enjoy the October Farm Festival with our friends at Donnell Century Farm Adventure!  See details below and don't miss the fun in the Casey Jones Corn Maze where you can play Corn Maize-o-poly with a scavenger hunt to earn Donnell "dollars" and become "Farmer of the Ear".

Posted 10/21/11: Two More Weekends to Enjoy Farm Festivals at Donnell Century Farm!

Families and groups from across West Tennessee have enjoyed three great weekends at the Donnell Century Farm Adventure. There are two weekends of farm fun left this fall season. The Donnell Family, led by Rose Ann and Billy Donnell, welcome guests each Saturday in October from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. A highlight of this year's event is the Casey Jones Corn Maze in the shape of Casey Jones' 1890's steam engine.

Spend the day in Possum Holler with the Big Tube Slide, Tractor Tire Playground, Corn-filled Sandboxes, Rubber Duck Races, Rat Rollers, Straw Climb and Pedal Tractors. Escape inside the Casey Jones' themed Corn Maze for a unique Monopoly-style Scavenger Hunt, complete with a turn at the Moo-lette wheel to earn fun prizes, or hop on the traditional hayride to get a tractor tour of the farm.

In business for more than 175 years, this working Century farm is one of the oldest in West Tennessee and offers families a wide range of activities such as the Barnyard Animal Petting Farm, Authentic Hen House and hands-on learning by Planting Corn Seeds, Picking Cotton, Digging a ‘Potato’ and Milking a Wooden Cow. The new Farm Museum is decorated with pumpkins and gourds available for purchase to decorate your yard and home. Food and drinks are available on site and children under the age of two are free.

Donnell Century Farm is located near Jackson, Tennessee at 3720 Highway 70 East in the Spring Creek community. It is very easy to find. Just take I-40 exit 87 east for 7 miles and the farm is on the right. They are on Facebook at "Donnell Century Farm Adventure" and the website is

Plectral Society to Play Music EVERY Thursday!

Jackson Area
Plectral Society Votes to Remain in Casey Jones Village Year Round

(Jackson, TN) On behalf of Casey Jones Village, Clark Shaw, CEO of Brooks Shaw's Old Country Store, is pleased to announce that the Jackson Area Plectral Society has voted to remain in the Village on Thursday evenings during the Winter months instead of going to a local church for their weekly club meetings. They will be playing their famous old-time music inside during the colder weather at the Old Country Store, Music Highway Crossroads on the stage where Carl Perkins began his career in the 1940's and at Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum. Shaw said that the members were excited to perform at the Train Station at Casey Jones Museum, which is a unique local venue where the community will be invited to enjoy the music and see a great Museum. The president of the Society is Donald Horne.

Shaw said, "We are so very pleased that the Plectral Society has chosen to make us their year round home. Our local, national and international guests love the live local music. The Society members are tremendously talented and we love sharing this slice of Americana with our guests. It's a perfect match for us. We strive to be a musical cultural center for West Tennessee and knowing that they will be here weekly year round is an outstanding addition to our Winter season."

The Jackson Area Plectral Society has been playing on Thursday evenings from April to October outside the Old Country Store for over 25 years and hold their annual fall festival in Casey Jones Village.
It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of old-time string music. Members participate in open-air jams composed of fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, bass, dobro, harmonica and any non-electric instrument that preserves the sanctity of old-time string music. Casey Jones Village is located on the Highway 45 By-pass at I-40 exit 80A in Jackson, Tennessee at 56 Casey Jones Lane. The website is www.caseyjones.com .
