Updated February 26th, 2010: It was a magical night at Songwriter's Depot February 25th as we welcomed two incredibly talented songwriters extraordinaire to the Depot stage ~ Victoria Shaw & Gary Burr. The show was fantastic and Victoria and Gary are immensely talented and genuinely nice folks. They both have amazing careers and are such interesting people. Happy Birthday to Gary today! Victoria asked if we could surprise Gary on stage with a dessert last night and he loved the hot fudge cake. Thank you to show producer Shane Connor for having them join us for the first time at Songwriter's Depot. We hope they come back again and again....

Songwriter's Depot February News!

(Jackson, TN) The WYN 106-9 Songwriter's Depot is live from the Old Country Store in Casey Jones Village on Thursday, February 25^th at 7 pm with the Dinner Hour beginning at 6 pm. This month's acoustic show welcomes two of Nashville's most respected writers to the Depot stage – Victoria Shaw and Gary Burr. Shaw wrote for and toured with Garth Brooks while Burr was a lead vocalist for Pure Prairie League and also plays guitar for Carole King.

Their songwriting credits include: "The River" & "She's Every Woman" for Garth Brooks, "I Love the Way You Love Me" for John Michael Montgomery, "Too Busy Being in Love" by Doug Stone, "Outside My Window" by Sarah Buxton, "I Try To Think About Elvis" by Patty Loveless and numerous other major hits (see list below).

Songwriter's Depot is a monthly musical event where guests enjoy dinner in the Barnside Room at the Old Country Store and then listen audience style to a live acoustic show by some of the country's finest songwriters who come in for the evening from Nashville. Admission is only $10 at the door. Dinner is not included in the cover charge.

(Jackson, TN) Songwriter's Depot is full steam ahead to kick-off the new year and 7th season of the popular live acoustic show Thursday, January 28th at the Old Country Store.

The dynamic line-up features three renowned singer/songwriters ~ Jimmy Melton, Casey Beathard & Phil O'Donnell ~ who between them have penned hits recorded by the biggest names in country music.

One of West Tennessee's favorite artists, Jimmy wrote "She Was" for Mark Chesnutt, "Every Friday Afternoon" for Craig Morgan and "I'm One of You" for Hank Williams, Jr. He has written songs for such country stars as George Jones, Blake Shelton and Dierks Bentley. A Henderson, Tennessee native, Jimmy has appeared on the Songwriter's Depot stage more than any other artist in the event's seven year history.

A past recipient of the BMI Songwriter of the Year award, Casey Beathard has countless hits for such stars as Kenny Chesney's with "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems" and Tracy Byrd, Gary Allen, Billy Currington and Trace Adkins.

Phil O'Donnell is an award winning songwriter of such mega hits as Craig Morgan's "That's What I Love About Sunday", Montgomery Gentry's "Back When I Knew It All", Clay Walker's "Fore She Was Mama" and co-wrote "Sounds Like Life to Me" with Darryl Worley. O'Donnell has co-produced with long time friend and country music star Craig Morgan on his last several recording projects.

Each month on the 4th Thursday, Songwriter's Depot offers an outstanding

night of musical entertainment featuring dinner hour at 6 pm followed by an acoustic show at 7 pm in the round featuring legendary songwriters from Nashville to Muscle Shoals performing songs they have penned and telling the story behind the song. It is produced by Shane Connor, Operations Manager of WYN 106.9.

The cover charge for the show is $10.00 per person. Dinner is not included in the price of the show. Reservations are required and can be made by calling WYN 106.9 at 731.427.9616.

To clarify: Do you need reservations? No, it's not like Songwriter's Depot where you pay a cover charge. Heather will be providing music for our dinner guests at the Old Country Store from 6:30 pm to 8 pm Saturday night, January 16th. It's not a private show so people will be coming and going.

Is it free? Yes, it's a free show for our dinner guests. There will be a limited number of seats for those just listening.

Named a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society in 2008, the 25th annual Old Country Store Christmas Eve Breakfast has announced it's 2009 non-profit guest as the National Meningitis Association. According to Deborah Shaw Laman, Old Country Store marketing director, "Several years ago we began to invite a non-profit organization to set up an information area to highlight their work to our guests at the Christmas Eve Breakfast. We lost a family member, Sarah Beth Whitehead, the niece of Juanita and Clark Shaw, to meningitis at the age of 14. She was a precious and incredible young lady. Her family will be our special guest at the Christmas Eve Breakfast. Her mother, Tresa Whitehead, is now a member of the National Meningitis Association's MOMs on Meningitis program.

Attendance at the Old Country Store Christmas Eve Breakfast each year is around 2,000 people for what has become a favorite Christmas tradition among West Tennessee area families.

Special Hours to Note:

Old Country Store: On December 23rd we will be closing at 8 pm to prepare for our Christmas Eve Breakfast.

New Year's Eve our hours are 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. The restaurant will close at 5 pm and the Gift Shoppe will stay open until 6 pm.

New Year's Day our hours are 11:00 am until 9:00 pm. We'll be serving black eyed peas & hog jowl and cabbage as a part of our New Year's Day buffet. Bring the family and celebrate 2010 with us!

Dwana Pusser Book Signing to be Held at Casey Jones Museum ~
Walking Tall Trail News

(Jackson, TN) Not many stories are more compelling than the story of Buford Pusser of Walking Tall fame. His daughter, Dwana Pusser Garrison, has dedicated her life to carrying on the Walking Tall legend and is a driving force for tourism in Adamsville and Tennessee. She will be signing copies of her autobiography Walking On ~ A Daughter's Journey with Legendary Sheriff Buford Pusser and will hold a meet and greet with a personal appearance at the Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum in Jackson on Saturday, December 19th at 1:00 pm.

The Walking Tall legend continues with an international marketing campaign with the launch of Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways announced in November by Governor Phil Bredesen. Led by the Department of Tourist Development, Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways is a statewide initiative encompassing all 95 counties along 15 regional trails and features Tennessee's five National Scenic Byways.

The Walking Tall Trail, currently in development, will highlight history and heritage tourism sites along a pathway from Memphis to Southwest Tennessee around Adamsville, Selmer, Savannah, Shiloh and Pickwick, north to Jackson and then back to Memphis.

The Buford Pusser Home & Museum is in Adamsville, Tennessee and is a museum in the Buford Pusser family residence dedicated to his world famous law enforcement career and the "Walking Tall" legend. The website is www.bufordpussermuseum.com .

Commissioner Susan Whitaker, Department of Tourist Development, announced at the launch of the Trails program that the country music superstars Rascal Flatts will be lending their voices and support to the project as part of the marketing campaign. Fittingly, the group’s hit song “Life is a Highway,” makes Rascal Flatts excellent musical ambassadors as part of the branding campaign.

Madison County by Linda J. Higgins and Scott Parish, both of Madison County, Tennessee, is part of the Images of America by Arcadia Publishing. The two authors give credit to the Jackson Madison County Library for the large collection of business pictures and information which started their 20th century business and history emphasis but also the many local people who were interested in preserving the history of their community.

Linda’s first roots came to Madison County in 1829, shortly after the county’s establishment in 1821. Her mother and grandmothers provided her with a strong love of history, especially family history. Scott, an author of children’s books, was inspired through the rich story telling traditions of his ancestors about his hometown’s history.

Linda is a 1960 graduate of South Side High School and a 1964 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville . Her master’s degree in political science is from the University of Memphis in 1981. She is an active member of the Bemis Historical Society having written several grants for the preservation of the Auditorium which is now the Mill Village Museum; a member of the Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society; has recently been approved for membership in the Daughters of American Revolution; and a member of the West Tennessee Historical Society. As the official Madison County Historian, she provides research and information to businesses and individuals who seek local historical connections.

When not doing genealogical or historical research, Higgins is active with the local Business and Professional Women, does free-lance writing, and organizes Grandmommy Camp for her five grandchildren. She also enjoys traveling with her husband, a recently retired Jackson Police Captain.

Shaw Family Attends Southern Foodways Alliance

Annual Symposium

(Jackson, TN) Four members of the Shaw Family who operate Brooks Shaw & Son Old Country Store in Casey Jones Village recently attended the 2009 Southern Foodways Alliance Symposium. Deborah Shaw Laman, and her Mother, Anne Shaw, attended the 2009 Delta Divertissement held in Greenwood, Mississippi. It began with a "Boarding House Lunch" at the Viking Range Training Center in downtown Greenwood with Viking chef Elizabeth Heiskell. The evening event was a trip to Indianola, Mississippi to visit the multi-million dollar B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretative Center followed by dinner at Club Ebony, now owned by B.B. King. Accommodations were at the world renowned Alluvian Hotel in downtown Greenwood.

Clark and Juanita Shaw attended the Symposium in Oxford, Mississippi which was entitled "Music & Food: Exploring Interdependent Cultural Expressions". The weekend long event entailed a fascinating schedule of various speakers, food events and networking with the conference attendees. The Southern Foodways Alliance is a member supported non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation and preservation of the diverse food cultures of the American South. It is under the directorship of John T. Edge, one of the country's most noted food experts and authors. The SFA is headquartered at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi at Oxford.

Yours truly was recently honored to speak at the Old Hickory Rotary Club and the Jackson Business & Professional Women's Club in Jackson. I really appreciate the invitation and spoke on all the new and exciting things happening in the Village. It was fun and everyone was so gracious!

Troy Mitchell Benefit Concert Planned

(Jackson, TN) The Golden Circle Opry and Brooks Shaw's Old Country Store are hosting a benefit concert in honor of the Troy Mitchell Family on Saturday, November 21st from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The community is invited to attend and musical entertainment will be provided by area musicians through the Golden Circle Opry. All funds collected will go toward the Troy Mitchell Family Fund through Englewood Baptist Church. Checks can also be mailed to "Englewood Baptist Church for Troy Mitchell Family Benefit Concert" at 2239 N. Highland, Jackson, TN 38305.

Troy Mitchell, a locksmith, was tragically shot October 28th in a
robbery shooting while working on a car for a customer. He died the following day and leaves a wife, Kelly, and seven sons. He was a 22 year combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps having earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star of Valour.

Brooks Shaw's Old Country Store is located at 56 Casey Jones Lane in Jackson, Tennessee.

What a great day at Art in the Village. The Grand Opening was wonderful with many local artists from the gallery on hand who are a part of the artist's co-op. There was live music, interesting art demonstrations and delicious refreshments. Many thanks to Mary Spellings and Laurie Denbrock and all the artists from the gallery for a great day.

Art in the Village to Host Grand Opening Festivities

Art in the Village, Jackson's newest art gallery, is hosting a Grand Opening celebration this Saturday, November 21st from 10 am to 5 pm. The gallery opened in the Shoppes at Casey Jones Village in October. The artist's cooperative features the works of twenty three local artists and this very special event will give the community an opportunity to meet the artists, attend seminars, enjoy live music and entertainment and register for door prizes. Light refreshments will be served.

“Holiday Mail for Heroes” to Deliver Greetings to U.S. Military Members and Veterans

Jackson, Tennessee - 2009—The American Red Cross, the Old Country Store & Casey Jones Museum will have an information area set up November 11th to announce the Holiday Mail for Heroes Program. The Old Country Store will provide free refreshments and coffee at Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum with free admission to the Museum from 10 am to 2 pm on Veteran's Day, Wednesday, November 11th. The Jackson Area Chapter will be available to provide information about the Holiday Mail for Heroes Program and how the community can get involved.

We have an extra special engagement this month on Thursday, October 29th (the fifth Thursday this month only) as Songwriter's Depot welcomes back to the stage the phenomenal Jimmy Fortune. He is a Country Music Hall of Fame member, a Gospel Music Hall of Fame member, the tenor singer for many years for the legendary Statler Brothers and an amazing talent. Appearing with Jimmy at the Old Country Store will be special guest, Kenny Beard, one of Nashville's most prolific hit writers.
