Old Country Store to Host National
Book Signing Event Saturday, June 5th
May 7th, 2010
(Jackson, TN) Brooks Shaw & Son Old Country Store is proud to announce a special book signing event for "Big Appetite ~ My Southern-Fried Search for the Meaning of Life" published by Simon & Schuster, Inc. Author Sam McLeod will be with us as a part of his national tour on Saturday, June 5th from 11 am to 1 pm. Sam is a relative of the Shaw family at the Old Country Store. Much of the book takes place in Jackson, Tennessee with stories of visiting his Aunt Wiese.
Sam was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1951, grew up there, attended college and graduate school at The University of Virginia and Washington & Lee University, worked as a banker, a lawyer, and a venture capital investor, and moved to Detour Farm with his wife Annie in 2004.
Since moving to the farm, Sam has written several books, produced an audio book, hosted a live variety show, written a newspaper column, and told his stories to anybody who’d listen. Please plan to join us at the Old Country Store in Casey Jones Village at 56 Casey Jones Lane in Jackson, Tennessee and read more about Sam's book below and on his website at www.sammcleod.net
For everyone who has ………
Collected lightning bugs in a quart-size Ball jar
Been in a watermelon fight
Fallen asleep to the sound of the grown-ups talking on the porch
Grown up Southern
It all begins with an invitation to a neighborhood reunion in Nashville, Tennessee. Sam McLeod’s wise wife Annie insists that her reluctant husband get in his car and go. But not before she issues a solemn warning …….. “You keep your hands off that old girlfriend, you hear me?”
As Sam drives, memories of childhood fill his head—of a simpler time when kids ran wild through open back yards, chucked snowballs at passing cars, and hung out in the tops of ancient oaks. Memories of his mother’s meatloaf, the taste of spicy pimento cheese, the tang of cold pickled shrimp, and the tart sweetness of his Aunt Wiese’s strawberry pie.
Sam McLeod’s Big Appetite is Garrison Keillor meets Paula Deen, the nostalgic, laugh- out-loud story of a man who comes to understand that his memories, and the food that carried the love of the women who cooked it, are all he needs to understand the meaning of life.
“A delicious book full of the finest kind of love stories about family, friends and food ….. and Sam’s not the only one who wore sandwich bags over his mittens in the snow. Must be a Souther-en thing.”
Celia Rivenbark, author
“This book brought back great memories of family, friends and food. It made me laugh and made me hungry!”
Joe Rogers, Jr., Chairman & CEO, Waffle House, Inc. (National Book Tour Sponsor)
Please plan to join us June 5th for this exciting event! Sam is also a fellow member of the Southern Foodways Alliance. http://www.southernfoodways.com/
